Rasmussen University Launches Three New Master of Science in Nursing – Nurse Practitioner (MSN–NP) Specializations in Pediatric, Adult Gerontology and Family Care

Designed for working nurses, the new MSN-NP specializations to help fill a growing healthcare demand

Rasmussen University, a university accredited by the Higher Learning Commission1, announced today the launch of three new CCNE-accredited2 Master of Science in Nursing – Nurse Practitioner specializations including Pediatric Primary Care, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care and Family.*

Rasmussen is launching the program specializations in response to the dramatic shortage of qualified health professionals to treat the country’s aging population and primary care concerns. The U.S. faces a projected shortage of between 37,800 and 124,000 physicians by 2034, according to The Complexities of Physician Supply and Demand: Projections From 2019 to 2034, an Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) report. With the growing physician shortage, advanced practice registered nurses – including nurse practitioners – are identified in the report to help fill the gap.

“Rasmussen University has a long history of evolving our programming to meet the needs of our community. We are proud to offer a breadth of nurse practitioner specializations that will prepare more nurses to meet the growing demands of our healthcare system,” said Dr. Josh Hamilton, assistant vice president & dean, post-licensure programs, School of Nursing at Rasmussen University. “Guided and supported by expert nursing faculty who are distinguished in their fields, the new program specializations offer the quality and excellence you expect from Rasmussen University.”

Adding to the launch of its Master of Science in Nursing, Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specialization in January, students now have a choice of four Nurse Practitioner specializations through Rasmussen.

Designed for working nurses, the MSN–NP program features Empowered Learning, which allows students to create real-world projects that demonstrate their new knowledge, and the flexibility to learn at their pace while staying connected to faculty and peers. The MSN–NP program specializations are led by doctorally prepared nursing faculty who share a wealth of community and clinical experience to prepare students in the field. The future-focused curriculum trains students on technology that is currently used in healthcare, like telehealth and ePrescribing, so their skills are real-world ready for the latest trends.

Employment for Nurse Practitioners is projected to grow by 52% through 2030 – much faster than the 8% average growth rate for all professions, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Additionally, in their 2022 report, U.S. News and World Report ranked Nurse Practitioner as the #1 job in healthcare, and the #2 job in the top 100 professions.

“There’s never been a better time to pursue a nurse practitioner degree. With four specializations to choose from at Rasmussen, and dedicated nursing faculty by their side, we can help prepare working nurses to take their next career step and pursue this critical, high-demand profession,” said Dr. Hamilton.
