athenahealth Kicks Off 2022 ‘September is for Service’ Program, Sponsored by athenaGives

Flagship event at company headquarters highlights MedShare partnership

athenahealth, Inc., a leading provider of network-enabled software and services for medical groups and health systems nationwide, today announced the launch of its annual “September is for Service” campaign, during which employees volunteer at various nonprofit partners, giving back to communities across India and the United States. Sponsored by athenaGives, the company’s corporate social responsibility program, the month-long event provides volunteer assistance to partner nonprofits that align with the athenaGives mission to provide equitable access to healthcare for all; improve food security; and support science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.

At the company’s flagship event, held Sept. 8 in Watertown, Massachusetts, athenahealth partnered with MedShare, a humanitarian aid organization dedicated to helping improve access to healthcare by sourcing and directly delivering surplus medical supplies and equipment to marginalized communities around the world. During the event, more than 100 volunteers assembled 2,000 clean birthing kits (CBKs) at athenahealth’s headquarters outside Boston. The kits are designed to create a safe, hygienic birth for people in marginalized communities around the world, many of whom do not have access to quality childbirth health services. The kits can potentially impact 4,000 lives, as each kit includes materials for the baby and the parent. athenahealth volunteers previously assembled 1,000 CBKs at MedShare’s headquarters in Decatur, Georgia, in June.

“By providing critical medical supplies and equipment, we are able to help strengthen local health systems in marginalized communities and reduce the risk of infection during childbirth to save lives,” said Charles Redding, CEO and President at MedShare. “We are committed to improving the quality of life of people and our planet, and we are grateful to partner with athenahealth to accelerate the impact we make in the developing world.”

The company-wide “September is for Service” program amplifies athenahealth’s social impact by aligning with nonprofit organizations. Throughout the month, athenahealth volunteers will support more than 15 organizations across the globe.

“We are thrilled to host the athenaGives ‘September is for Service’ program again this year, as an enhancement of last year’s week-long pilot event. In 2022 we are making an even greater collective impact, including volunteering events across our India and U.S. office locations,” said Allyson Livingstone, executive director of diversity and inclusion at athenahealth. “We look forward to the positive results that come from this event, as we continue to bring our commitment to social responsibility to life.”

The athenaGives “September is for Service” program includes numerous volunteering opportunities for employees, including the Atlanta Community Food Bank in Atlanta, Georgia; Come Spring Food Pantry in Belfast, Maine; and India STEM Foundation events in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Pune.
