“It is an honor to be recognized by Forbes among America’s Top Lawyers,” said Summy. “For decades, I have worked alongside many talented individuals to hold companies accountable for environmental contamination concerns across the country. Our work on behalf of our clients and the environment is truly rewarding and receiving this honor only strengthens my commitment to protecting the environment from corporate negligence.”

According to Forbes, the lawyers on the list were selected through a rigorous process involving an editorial team that identified a pool of candidates through “hundreds of interviews with industry insiders, outside nominations, editorial research, and an independent, five-person advisory board of experts.” The group formulated the list of elite lawyers based on their lifetime achievements, but also their most significant recent cases.

Last year, Summy served as co-lead counsel in a landmark $12.5 billion nationwide class settlement with 3M, the largest drinking water contamination settlement in U.S. history. The lawsuit focused on 3M and other companies for manufacturing and selling products containing PFAS, synthetic chemicals known for their harmful effects on human health and the environment. Summy also secured a $1.185 billion nationwide class settlement against DuPont for PFAS contamination in drinking water supplies and coordinated a $648 million nationwide PCB class settlement against Monsanto, setting a precedent for manufacturer liability in stormwater contamination cases.

Additionally, earlier in his career, Summy played a pivotal role in the litigation stemming from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, resulting in approximately $14 billion being paid to impacted parties. He has further represented numerous businesses in claims against BP, recovering over $100 million for his clients. Summy remains committed to environmental protection, leading the charge in environmental tort litigation, recognizing the ongoing importance of safeguarding clean water and the environment.
