NSTA Announces Call for Submissions: The 2024-2025 Shell Science Teaching Award and the Shell Urban Science Educators Development Award

Cash Prizes and Expense Paid Trip to Attend NSTA’s National Conference to be Awarded for Outstanding Science Teaching

The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) is inviting submissions for the Shell Science Teaching Award and the Shell Urban Science Educators Development Award, where cash prizes and an expense-paid trip to attend NSTA’s National Conference on Science Education in Philadelphia next spring are to be awarded for exemplary science teaching.

The Shell Science Teaching Award recognizes one outstanding classroom teacher (grades K–12) who has had a positive impact on their students, school, and the community through exemplary science teaching. The award is open to all K–12 teachers, who have a minimum of eight years of experience (not including the current school year) as a teacher of science, and who teach in a public or private school located in the United States, U.S. territories, Department of Defense schools, or in Canada.

The Shell Urban Science Educators Development Award provides support to K–12 classroom science teachers in urban settings who are in pursuit of professional development and serves to increase the science educator talent pool of minority educators to meet the education work force challenge of the future. Designed to help strengthen quality science teaching and enhance teacher content knowledge, classroom science teachers at the elementary, middle, or high school level who are part of underrepresented ethnic groups are eligible to apply for the award. Qualifying underrepresented ethnic groups include African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans/Alaska Natives who maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment, Hawaiian Natives, and natives of the U.S. Pacific Islands.

Three Shell Science Teaching Award finalists will receive an expenses-paid trip to attend NSTA’s national conference, taking place March 26-29, 2025, with the Award recipient also receiving $10,000. Winners of the Shell Urban Science Educators Development Award will be given $1800 in expenses to attend the conference. All Shell Award recipients will be honored during the Shell reception at the conference.
