New Industry Report from Dodge Construction Network and the Lean Construction Institute Sounds Alarm: Most Construction Firms Are Missing Out on the Proven Power of Lean

Lean construction practices are driving dramatic gains in schedule, budget, safety, and collaboration.

A new report offers compelling evidence that Lean construction practices are not just theoretical ideals – they’re driving real world improvements for teams that adopt them. The Building High-Performance Projects and Teams SmartMarket Insight report, based on surveys spanning 2013 to 2024, shows that Lean methods lead to better outcomes across the board: fewer delays, fewer overruns, stronger team collaboration, and improved safety.

Yet the data also shows that while awareness of Lean is growing, most construction professionals have yet to fully embrace its potential.

“This research highlights what many in the industry have already experienced firsthand,” said Donna Laquidara-Carr, Director Industry Analytics at Dodge Construction Network. “When teams invest in Lean practices, they see meaningful improvements—in timelines and budgets, and especially in the way people work together.”

Persistent Challenges—and a Way Forward

Despite years of innovation, many firms still struggle with the basics:

  • 61% of owners report schedule delays on typical projects
  • 49% experience budget overruns
  • Even on their best projects, 1 in 5 teams still face delays or budget issues

But only a small percentage—just 6%—say they are deeply engaged in Lean practices. The report reveals a clear opportunity for improvement.

“It’s encouraging to see growing interest in Lean, but there’s still work to do,” said Dan Heinemeier, Executive Director at LCI. “Many teams are aware of Lean concepts but haven’t yet made the shift to consistent implementation. This report shows that those who do are experiencing real value—in both performance and team culture.”

Lean Drives Stronger Performance and Collaboration

The research found that teams applying a broad range of Lean practices consistently outperformed their peers. Contractors and designers who were more engaged in Lean reported:

  • Better adherence to budgets and timelines
  • Higher-quality results
  • Stronger communication and collaboration
  • Safer, more efficient job sites

“What stood out most was how closely Lean is tied to team dynamics,” said Laquidara-Carr. “The most successful projects in our study weren’t just efficient—they were collaborative, respectful, and aligned. And those outcomes are clearly correlated with Lean practices.”

Missed Opportunities for Non-Adopters

While 75% or more of Lean-engaged professionals reported improvements across key metrics, more than half of non-users were unaware of these benefits—revealing a significant knowledge gap in the industry.

“There’s no question that Lean can make a difference, but we know change takes time,” said Heinemeier. “Our goal with this research is to provide the data and tools needed to help more teams explore Lean and begin integrating it in ways that make sense for their work.”
