Led by the Attorney General’s Office in partnership with the Alabama Anti-Human Trafficking Alliance, The WellHouse and Engage Together®, Phase 1 establishes a coordinated statewide roadmap for action
The Office of the Alabama Attorney General, the Alabama Anti-Human Trafficking Alliance, and The WellHouse today announced the public release of the Alabama Statewide Human Trafficking Assessment at the Alabama Human Trafficking Summit. Developed in partnership with Engage Together®, the assessment marks the completion of Phase 1: Research & Reports—a comprehensive, data-driven analysis designed to strengthen efforts to prevent and combat human trafficking across every county in Alabama.
“The Alabama Office of the Attorney General is committed to eradicating human trafficking in our state,” said Steve Marshall, Attorney General of Alabama. “Though this is an ambitious goal, we are unwavering in our stance: the victimization of human beings for labor or sexual exploitation will not be tolerated in Alabama, and decisive action is required.”
Phase 1 represents the foundational step in a coordinated, statewide approach. The assessment includes extensive data collection and analysis to evaluate existing resources for individuals at risk of or impacted by trafficking, identify gaps and vulnerabilities, map risk factors, review relevant legislation, and surface opportunities to strengthen coordination across agencies, sectors, and communities.
The Alabama Statewide Human Trafficking Assessment is a collaborative initiative led by the Office of the Attorney General and the Alabama Anti-Human Trafficking Alliance, in partnership with The WellHouse. The initiative also includes collaboration with nearly 40 agencies and organizations across Alabama—including several universities—working together with Engage Together® to establish a shared, statewide understanding of the trafficking landscape.
“Engage Together has given us something we didn’t have before—a clear, statewide understanding of where we are, what gaps exist, and how we can better coordinate our efforts,” said Katie Beth McCarthy, JD, Alabama Anti-Human Trafficking Alliance Coordinator. “This assessment is not just confirming what we suspected; it is revealing opportunities we hadn’t seen and bringing partners together across Alabama in new ways. We now have a roadmap that will help us strengthen services, improve collaboration, and better serve survivors across the entire state.”
Findings from Phase 1 will directly inform Phase 2, which will focus on strategic planning, coalition-building, and community mobilization efforts across Alabama.
