Chalk Riot, a mural production studio dedicated to transforming public spaces with pavement art, has launched a new website: www.chalkriothowto.com The platform is designed to inspire and equip artists, city leaders, educators, and everyday advocates to create safer, more inclusive streets through vibrant pavement art.
As cities nationwide face a growing crisis in pedestrian safety—highlighted by a 2022 record of 7,522 pedestrian deaths—the new webpage arrives as a timely resource. Chalk Riot offers insider tips and pavement mural best practices, as well as a collection of relevant online resources for anyone in pursuit of creating their own traffic-calming artwork.
Drawing on data from the Asphalt Art Initiative by Bloomberg Philanthropies, community-led street murals can reduce traffic crashes by up to 50% and increase pedestrian visibility by 17%. These outcomes underscore pavement art as not just beautification—but a tactical approach to public safety and neighborhood empowerment.
The new site features:
-
A collection of downloadable tools and guides for planning street murals, from esteemed organizations such as the Neighborhood Design Center, Bloomberg Philanthropies and Toole Design
-
Industry tips for mural site safety

“We want to be a helpful resource for anyone who wants to create traffic calming murals,” says Chelsea Ritter-Soronen, Chalk Riot CEO. “We receive emails and DMs about the pavement art production process from all over the country. Since we cannot always answer all of them, we created this online resource that features answers to our most frequently asked questions.” Sam Hamilton, Project Manager at Chalk Riot says, “The more successful and durable all street murals are, the more our industry will continue to thrive, and the more artists can get involved!” “Chalk Riot does not believe in gatekeeping art skills, we believe in access and education,” says Abby Wentworth, Chalk Riot Project Coordinator. “In our divided country, pavement murals can be a powerful way to unite communities around a common goal of creating safer streets for all.”
The site encourages visitors to take initiative in their own communities—no artistic background required.
