The Kokoda Challenge Expands to Sydney

Sydney, Australia, March 20, 2025 — Australia’s most gruelling team endurance event, The Kokoda Challenge, is making its debut in Sydney. Known to push its participants to their limits while honouring the sacrifices of Australian soldiers on the Kokoda Track in 1942, this event is more than just a trail hike—it’s a true test of resilience, teamwork, and mateship.

The Kokoda Challenge has been the go-to team endurance event in Queensland for 20 years, and it has attracted thousands of competitors looking to meet its tough mental and physical challenges head-on. Now, Sydney residents will have their chance to experience this life-changing event and gain a glimpse of the mental and physical challenges faced by the soldiers of the Kokoda Track.

The event itself isn’t just another charity hiking event; it’s specifically designed to push participants beyond what they believe they’re capable of by encouraging participants to embody the values of courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice. The Kokoda Challenge is also a fundraising initiative. So, it’s more than just a physical challenge; it’s an event that offers its participants the opportunity to grow while building deeper connections with those around them.

The proceeds from the event go towards supporting the Kokoda Youth Foundation, a non-profit organisation that’s dedicated to helping young Australians develop resilience and leadership skills through experiential learning programs. So, by taking part in the challenge, participants are directly contributing to youth empowerment, fostering positive change within the community and helping build the next generation of strong, resilient leaders.

Sydney’s first-ever Kokoda Challenge will take place at Heathcote and Royal National Park on 20 September 2025. The event features various course lengths of 18km, 48km, and 96km and participants complete the distance together in teams. This ensures that both seasoned endurance athletes and first-time challengers can take part in the event. Everyone that joins must form a team, as the goal of the challenge is to instil the feeling and sacrifices of completing the challenge together, showing how teamwork can help overcome even the greatest obstacles.

“We are thrilled to bring The Kokoda Challenge to Sydney and introduce more Australians to this incredible experience,” said Becky of The Kokoda Challenge team. “This event is about so much more than just endurance—it’s about personal growth, honouring history, building lasting friendships, and making a real difference in the lives of young Australians.”

For those unfamiliar with the history of the Kokoda Track from the 1942 Kokoda Campaign, its path traversed from Owers’ Corner—which was inaccessible by vehicles—to Wairopi, which was connected by a bridge over the Kumasi River to Buna, Gona, and Sanananda on the north coast of Papua New Guinea.

Despite incoming reinforcements, the Australian soldiers were outnumbered and underprepared, so they had to withdraw while still providing enough resistance to the Japanese army along the track to at least slow down its advances.

The Japanese army was eventually suppressed, but the campaign took an estimated number of 625 Australian lives; 1,600 were wounded, and more than 4,000 casualties from illness. The Kokoda Challenge was inspired by the events of the Kokoda Track and offered participants a glimpse into the perseverance and courage displayed by our soldiers who fought along the track.
