Upbeat Economic Reports Overseas and Merger Activity Lift Markets

Stocks posted slim gains on Tuesday as more merger activity poured in. CF Industries (CF) relaunched a buyout offer for fertilizer maker Terra Industries (TRA), which last month agreed to be sold to Norway’s Yara for $4.1 billion.
