PRLog - Jun 20, 2013 - SAN FRANCISCO -- Peter Anton exhibits a selection of new pieces in his first ever San Francisco solo show, 'Random Acts of Indulgence,' at Scott Richards Contemporary Art July 2 through July 27th, 2013. The over-sized mixed-media sculptures of succulent, glistening sweets call to mind the pop-culture influence of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, combined with the pop-art sensibility of Jeff Koons or Claes Oldenburg. A reception for the artist will be held at the gallery on Thursday, July 11, 5:30-7:30 pm.

“Through the use of humor, scale, irony, and intensity in my forms,” says Anton, “the foods we take for granted become aesthetically pleasing and seductive in atypical ways. I like to create art that can lure, charm, tease, disarm and surprise.” He adds, “The sensual nature of the works addresses basic human needs and desires and is a larger comment on consumption, passion, obsession and indulgence.”

The exaggerated size, richly colored shapes, and sugar-coated surfaces make for tantalizing still life subjects of ice pops, ice cream bars and boxes of chocolates or donuts (some half eaten). The theme of candy and desserts evokes simple child-like nostalgia and shared memories, while representing the excesses of contemporary culture. In the spirit of indulgence – and with a healthy dash of good humor – Peter Anton delivers monumental-sized, hyper-realistic forms that bring out the kid in each of us.

Anton’s multicolored, slick and textured surfaces are meticulously crafted from carefully selected and manipulated materials including cast foam, plaster, wood, resin, clay, aluminum, fabric, and acrylic, oil and high-gloss industrial paints. The slick playfulness on the outside of the work contradicts the craft and attention to detail that goes into each piece, hiding the efforts that Mr. Anton puts into luring you into his candy-covered world.
