Hollywood Electrics Racing returned to Pikes Peak with Zero Motorcycles to Shatter their Production Electric Motorcycle Record by almost 40 Seconds
WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. & COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - June 30, 2016 - PRLog -- Hollywood Electrics and Zero Motorcycles, leaders in all-electric motorcycles, raced in Colorado on June 26, 2016 at the 100th Anniversary and 94th running of the annual Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC). Two race-prepped Zero Motorcycle FXS Supermotos were piloted by motorcycle racing stars Mark Miller (#10) and Marcel Irnie (#174). Team Hollywood Electrics Racing shaved almost 40 seconds from their previous Production Electric Motorcycle record and safely completed the 2016 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to keep the fastest Production Electric Vehicle record on America's Mountain.

Racer's Miller and Irnie successfully piloted the Zero Motorcycles FXS Supermotos from the base to the summit of Pikes Peak, despite adverse road conditions, including water and ice. The race, which was originally scheduled to begin at 8am, was delayed for approximately 45 minutes as PPIHC officials evaluated potential road hazards caused by heavy overnight rains, which had turned to partial ice in the upper sections of the race course. Miller raced off the starting line as the third competitor of the day, followed by Irnie as the fourth. In the upper section of the course, Miller low-sided his motorcycle, which cost him critical seconds. Ultimately Miller's time was fewer than 10 seconds from the 2nd place in the Electric Motorcycle class. Fortunately he was uninjured and was able to power through the rest of the waterlogged course and finish in 11:20.448, besting Team Hollywood Electrics Racing's prior fastest time of 11:59.814.

In the Electric Motorcycle class dominated by high-end prototype Electric Motorcycles, that are unavailable to everyday riders, Miller and Irnie placed fourth and fifth in class on their production electric motorcycles. Their performances show that Zero Motorcycles can compete with the best prototypes in the world.

A Pikes Peak rookie, Mark Miller arrived with an extensive résumé that includes the "Fastest Lap by an American at the Isle of Man TT." In addition to 11 years of Isle of Man TT racing with one first and three podium finishes, Miller competed in the Macau Grand Prix 16 times, and has finished on the podium 20 times, one win, with AMA Pro National Road Racing. Miller said, "We got up the mountain and were all safe though it was absolutely wet, freezing, and had slippery conditions. The bike worked amazing. Thanks to Team Hollywood Electrics for the opportunity." Irnie stated, "I really enjoyed electric racing. I would like to explore electrics more in the future for sure. As a daily rider I'd love that. I would do it again."

Team Hollywood Electrics raced to the clouds on all new 2016 Zero FXS models which boast an incredible 70 ft-lb max torque on a 293 lb chassis. Made in Santa Cruz, California, these electric motorcycles are able to deliver consistent performance at any altitude, unaffected by the thin air that wreaks havoc on the fuel mixture of their internal combustion powered counterparts. The team returned this year as the three-time Electric Production Class winner with consecutive titles in 2013, 2014, and 2015, yet this was Miller & Irnie's first race on America's Mountain.

"We're happy that we beat our previous production electric motorcycle record by nearly 40 seconds, and that our riders made it home safely despite treacherous course conditions," said Team Owner Harlan Flagg of Hollywood Electrics Racing. "Pikes Peak is an incredibly challenging course. This year 20% of all competitors did not finish the race, yet in our four years of participation, fielding 12 entries on Zeros, everyone finished - without a single mechanical problem." He continued, "If these bikes can successfully negotiate the gauntlet of Pikes Peak, they can easily meet the needs of everyday riders, as our customers all over the world already know."

"We're proud to have joined with Hollywood Electrics to field such a powerful team," said Todd Andersen, Zero Motorcycles head of Global Sales, Marketing and After-Sales. "The race is a perfect showcase for our technology. With their phenomenal torque and acceleration, Zero electric motorcycles are ideally suited to the Race to the Clouds."

The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, Brought to you by Gran Turismo, began in 1916. This year marks the 100th Anniversary and 94th Running of the "Race to the Clouds" for the second oldest motorsports race in America. It takes place on a 12.42 mile course beginning at 9,390 feet with 156 turns and ending at the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak, also known as "America's Mountain."
