NEWPORT, R.I. - Aug. 4, 2016 - PRLog -- The Little Traverse Yacht Club's "Ugotta Regatta" took place this past weekend in Harbor Springs, Michigan and involved one of the largest big boat completions outside of the West Coast. This was the first year that the Offshore Racing Rule was used as one of the official rating rules at this event.
The Offshore Racing Association (ORA), which operates the Offshore Racing Rule (ORR), was excited that the Little Traverse Yacht Club (LTYC) selected this rule to be an integral part of this well-organized and popular event. "As the Offshore Racing Rule becomes more and more popular with sailors, we are thrilled to see race organizers use it for their events," states Bjorn Johnson, Executive Director of the Offshore Racing Association. The LTYC's use of ORR as the handicap system for the Ugotta Regatta was a sound example of how the system can fairly score big boats.
Sailors found participation in this event easy with the use of ORR and the yacht scoring registration system. "This was a great regatta with pleasant sailing in moderate winds. Friday saw 12-18 knots, Saturday saw 9-15 knots and Sunday saw 6-12 knots, all from the easterly quadrant; it was very shifty with up to 30 degree swings," said Pete Reichelsdorfer, sailing as part of the S/Y Evolution Team, a GL 70 competitor in the ORR "A" Class. According to Reichelsdorfer, "It was a well-run regatta and LTYC should be congratulated. The ORR 'A' Class was a real dog fight; lee bows, ducks, nose to tail and overlapped mark rounding were the order of the day."
The winner of the ORR "A" Class, S/Y Heartbreaker, a TP 52, had a string of first and third place finishes. Overall the corrected finish times were incredibly close between all of the competitors. In both the ORR "A" and ORR "B" classes, the corrected time orders of finish between all the competitors were very close and showed a good mix of boat types and designs. The ORR "B" Class winner, S/Y Bretwalda 3, a Rogers 46, sailed by Bob Pethick's team, had multiple good starts and maintained their lead to win.
Established in 1895, the Little Traverse Yacht Club is one of the oldest clubs in Michigan. The Ugotta Regatta is an important event both within the small town of Harbor Springs and for top sailors throughout the Great Lakes. For full race results, go here.
