New Technology Harnesses Rise in Internet Access to Transform World Health

By: PRLog
SAN DIEGO - Aug. 10, 2016 - PRLog -- 3.8 billion people – over 50% of the world's population – still do not have access to the internet. Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, with the support of the United Nations, have united on a mutual goal— to expand connectivity and make the internet globally accessible by 2020.

Narrowing of the digital divide between developing and developed nations is set to have significant impact on global health, with health professionals all over the world recognizing that internet connectivity is no longer a luxury but rather a necessary health care tool.

"The difference between global health and disease lies in access to health education and services," states health expert Matt Riemann, who recently advised the United Nations on aspects of global health change. "By providing access to otherwise unavailable resources and services that educate, support and connect, we are helping to create a system of health where there was none before."

Health and medical companies are seizing the opportunities provided by universal and affordable internet access to offer products that promote equity in health access and enable people to take control of their health in unprecedented ways. A global health company at the forefront of accessible web-based health solutions, Personal Health 360 (ph360) recently pioneered the first virtual health assistant, Shae, which enables access to evidence-based, equitable and personalized health care.

With the new tool, dubbed "Siri for Your Health," algorithms spanning a dozen unique sciences calculate a person's current health status and risk to offer tailored lifestyle recommendations in via the computer, phone, tablet, smartwatch, or any connected device. "Shae takes the ease and convenience that assistants like Siri offer and extends it to health," says Vice President of Product Rebekah Morrison. "Shae enables each and every person to have access to an eating plan tailored to their specific body and an exercise regimen designed for their body's unique metrics, needs and abilities right at their fingertips. All they need is an internet connection and a tape measure."

Expanded availability of internet and internet-enabled health solutions welcomes great potential to improve population health in developed countries where internet access is readily available, and especially in developing areas where resources for health care are notoriously limited.

"Once universal access to the internet is achieved, humanity will emerge victoriously from its decades-long struggle with chronic illness and pain," says Riemann.

"Never before in history have we been presented with such a powerful opportunity to create positive global change. We will not stop until everyone has access to the information and resources they need to be healthy."
