Two faculty members at National American University (NAU), Ethan Webster Schmidt, JD, and Herb Kemp, Ph. D. have been promoted to full professorship in NAU’s Henley-Putnam School of Strategic Security.

Ethan Webster Schmidt, JD, and Herb Kemp, Ph.D., faculty members at National American University (NAU), have been promoted to full professorship in NAU’s Henley-Putnam School of Strategic Security.
“Mr. Schmidt and Dr. Kemp exemplify the highest standards of professional excellence and public service in their respective fields. They have dedicated their careers to advancing knowledge, and have applied their talents and energy toward achieving NAU’s mission through teaching and service. This is an important milestone in their teaching careers,” said Dr. Barbara Burke, Dean, Intelligence Management Program.
Ethan Webster Schmidt began his NAU teaching career in 1998 as an instructor at NAU’s Ellsworth AFB campus. Since 2004, he has taught NAU online courses in criminal justice as well as business, criminal, civil, constitutional and international law. Mr. Schmidt has practiced civil and criminal law for more than 30 years and is passionate about leading by example through public service and making a positive difference in the lives and careers of students. Prior to joining NAU, he served as Assistant South Dakota District Attorney General and as Deputy Keith County Nebraska Attorney, where he represented the county in civil matters and even served as Coroner. More recently he served on the Rapid City, South Dakota Planning and Zoning Commission and was elected to the Pennington County South Dakota Board of Commissioners for a 4-year term. Ethan also volunteers his time to numerous local boards, committees and organizations. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Banking and Finance from the University of Nebraska and Juris Doctorate from the University of North Dakota.
Dr. Herb Kemp joined NAU in 2014 as a faculty member in the Doctorate of Strategic Security program offered through NAU’s Henley-Putnam School of Strategic Security. He sits on multiple dissertation committees as Chair and Committee Member. He is a lifelong intelligence and national security professional with successive careers in the military, defense, industry and academia. A retired Air Force Colonel with service in 31 countries on five continents, his assignments included the Air Staff at the Pentagon, Group Commander at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona and Assistant Air Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv. After his military service, Dr. Kemp worked as an executive in the defense industry for 10 years, and later as a defense consultant. Dr. Kemp holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Organization and Management from Capella University, a Master of Science in Systems Management from the University of Southern California, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from West Virginia University. He is a graduate of the Air War College and the Defense Intelligence College (School of Attaché Training). He attended the Foreign Service Institute (Middle East Area Studies) and the Intelligence and Policy Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He has also published extensively on a broad range of intelligence and strategic security topics.
