Item 2.03 Creation of a Direct Financial Obligation or an Obligation under an Off-Balance Sheet Arrangement of a Registrant
In a press release issued on July 29, 2010, Matson Navigation Company, Inc. ("Matson"), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc., announced that it will initiate a new, second China shipping service. In connection with this new China shipping service, Matson will enter into time charter agreements for five container ships, with terms ranging from one to two years, and leases for containers with terms of approximately five years. The expected aggregate cost of such time charter agreements and leases is approximately $55 million. The Company became obligated for the charter of two container ships on July 30, 2010.
