Based on tens of millions of Vacasa.com site visits and thousands of vacation home reservations, the data paints a clear picture on what guests are looking for in a vacation—and a vacation rental.

Here’s a first look at key takeaways from Vacasa’s 2022 Vacation Rental Search Report:

  • Get this paradise started: Searches for tropical destinations are way up, with Hawaii seeing a 123 percent surge in searches year-over-year and Costa Rica a close runner-up.
  • Thursday is the new Friday: Reservations starting on Thursdays are up 70 percent, likely due to remote and hybrid work environments that allow travelers to hit the road sooner.
  • The magic of mid-length stays: Travelers are averaging four-night stays during their getaways, but that average jumps to nearly six nights in January as guests cozy up and settle in.
  • Fill up on vitamin sea: Sunny beaches dominated our top 10 most-searched cities, with Destin, Florida, in the number one spot for the second year in a row.
  • Mobile or desktop? Better together: While guests favor searching for vacation homes on their smartphone, most will still head to their desktop to complete their booking.
