Oxnard Obstructive Sleep Apnea CPAP Mask Alternative Treatment Announced

Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center (+1-805-557-9930) of Thousand Oaks, CA now offers Inspire therapy, the first implantable device to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and an alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) masks.

Following the center’s latest announcement, Inspire therapy is offered to OSA patients who have already tried the CPAP device without consistent benefit, or those who prefer a different treatment altogether. Unlike the CPAP device, Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation therapy device is fully implanted and controlled by a small handheld remote, with no mask or hose.

The center’s new therapy comes as the number of people suffering from sleep apnea is expected to increase. The American Medical Association (AMA) has reported that, as of April 2022, one in 15 Americans suffers from sleep apnea and about 30% of this population reports some symptoms.

CPAP devices use tubing to continuously pump pressurized air into the user’s airway through a sleep mask, which prevents it from collapsing. Inspire therapy, however, works by constantly monitoring the user’s breathing patterns and lightly stimulating airway muscles to prevent them from collapsing, thus keeping the airway open during sleep.

The therapy has been approved by the FDA and clinically proven to significantly decrease patients’ number of sleep apnea incidents, helping them and their loved ones have a better night’s sleep and improving their overall quality of life.

The Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center was founded by Dr. Ronald Popper. Dr. Popper is board-certified in sleep disorders medicine by both the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) and the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). Under his guidance, the Center has the unique distinction of being the first non-hospital, non-university-based sleep disorders center to be fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

“On my first sleep study, the technician was very competent, as well as very calming, which helped to alleviate my anxiety,” one satisfied patient said. “I found Dr. Popper and his staff extremely professional and highly competent. I’m very pleased with all the help Dr. Popper has given me all these years.”
