“Misplaced” is Buckley’s first book, and is a retelling through poetry of his childhood and experiences at the Academy at Ivy Ridge, the infamous disciplinary reform school featured in the Netflix docuseries “The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping." The school notoriously abused its students, forcing them to adhere to an authoritarian standard of rules. Buckley is one of the few to speak out, and he does so through a captivating story.
The memoir details Buckley’s experiences through the adoption system and his experiences within the troubled teen industry. He recounts his turbulent childhood, scarred by loss and trauma due to an abusive father and his eventual placement at the cruel Ivy Ridge Academy.
Despite the pain he endures, Colin fights to reclaim his own identity, working towards finding his voice while surrounded by those wishing him failure. He embarks on a search for his birth family, fighting back against the environment of Ivy Ridge and the actions of his father. The reader is taken on this journey with him, with photos and documents testifying to the harsh reality of the situation that Colin was put through.
Buckley uses poetry to create a testimony of an unwavering hope to succeed and grow, despite being placed deep within a system of abuse. Through his story, ‘Misplaced’ reveals the deeper truths of both the often-undiscussed troubled teen industry, and the repercussions of an abusive childhood. It conveys the very real consequences of prioritizing corporations and profit over the lives of children, broadcasting the plights of the many other kids forced into similar situations.
Colin Buckley is a two-time combat veteran, and is a father, husband, and artist. His variety of life experiences include being adopted at birth, tours in Iran and Afghanistan, work as a truck driver and farmer, and raising his four kids at the same time. His unique variety of experiences give him a rare, sincere voice that shines throughout his work.
