-- As data science and artificial intelligence transform industries across the globe, Newman University's Master of Data Science program is distinguishing itself through a comprehensive curriculum that places ethics at its core while maintaining strong connections to industry professionals through the Data Professionals of Wichita initiative.

"Our program is committed to producing not just technically proficient data scientists, but ethical leaders who can guide their organizations through the challenges of the data age," said David Cochran, Dean of Newman's School of Business & Technology and founder of the Data Professionals of Wichita group. "The most pressing issues in data science today require professionals who can balance technical expertise with a strong moral compass."

In an era of growing concerns about data privacy, algorithmic bias and responsible AI development, Newman's program integrates Data Governance, Statistics for Data Science and Data Ethics throughout its curriculum. This approach ensures graduates are prepared to navigate the complex moral and legal implications of data-driven decision making.

Comprehensive Curriculum with Flexibility for Working Professionals

Newman’s Master of Data Science program offers a carefully structured progression that begins with data analytics and data storytelling using industry-leading software, advances through data warehousing and data engineering, and culminates with courses in machine learning. This comprehensive approach ensures students develop both breadth and depth in their understanding of the field.

Designed with working professionals in mind, the program is available fully online with Zoom meetings and video instruction. For those who prefer in-person engagement, weekly on-campus course meetings are offered, providing flexibility that accommodates diverse student needs.

"We recognize that many of our students are balancing career obligations with their graduate studies," Cochran said. "Our flexible approach ensures that professionals can advance their education without putting their careers on hold."

Industry-Informed Curriculum and Networking Opportunities

What sets Newman's program apart is its development in extensive consultation with industry professionals, ensuring the curriculum focuses on the most current knowledge, software and skillsets needed for real-world data science initiatives.

The program's industry connections are further strengthened by the Data Professionals of Wichita group, established by Cochran. The group began meeting in March 2022 and brings together data professionals from across the region 4-6 times annually, providing valuable networking opportunities for students.

"When the relationships are formed, people are more likely to reach out to each other to ask for help as they build their careers," said Joy Eakins, one of the industry professionals involved with the group. Recent events have featured panels with data analytics professionals from leading local companies including INTRUST Bank, Delta Bravo AI, Cornerstone Data Group, Koch Industries and Textron Aviation.

Jennifer Akers, another participant, noted: "Not only does it give students opportunities to network with local professionals, which can lead to internships and employment, but it's also an opportunity to ask questions about what professionals really do in their day-to-day."

Proven Track Record of Student Success

The program's effectiveness is demonstrated through success stories like Julia Myers, a 2022 business data analytics graduate from Newman University, who secured a role at Textron Aviation after an analytics internship with the aviation company. She continued her education with Newman’s MDS program.

"Newman is blessed to have people like Professor Cochran — both highly technical in their respective fields and very willing to take the time to help students absorb and understand the material," Myers said, crediting the university's passionate professors for his professional development.

This example underscores the program's role in preparing students for high-demand positions in the data science field, with graduates finding opportunities at leading regional employers.

Ethical Focus Addresses Contemporary Challenges

The program's emphasis on data ethics is particularly relevant given the current landscape of AI and data privacy concerns. Students are prepared to handle the ethical implications of data science decisions, a crucial skill as organizations navigate increasingly complex regulatory environments and public expectations around data usage.

John King, senior manager at Walmart, is an instructor in Newman’s data science graduate program and believes the degree can lead great careers. “I would say we are just at the early innings of what analytics is about and what you can do. There is a tremendous amount of opportunity,” King said. “I would the caveat though is if you’re going to do this as a career you should commit to continuous learning. There’s really no short-cuts.”

He suggests finding good mentors, reading and hand-ons practice. “I’m a testament to this…if you do stay the course, there are rewards at the end of all of that,” King added.

According to Cochran, Newman’s Master of Data Science program helps form difference making employees for companies. "By emphasizing ethics alongside technical skills, the MDS program prepares graduates who will use their expertise responsibly and effectively in a rapidly evolving field.”
