The event aims to help Canada’s 1.25 million lymphedema and 2.2 million lipedema patients navigate their conditions. While both disorders can cause swelling in the arms and legs, they are distinctly different conditions. Consultants will help explain the unique characteristics of each condition and share practical strategies for coping with both.
Rates of lymphedema - a condition indicated by swelling that occurs because the lymphatic system is damaged - are on the rise in Canada, according to the Canadian Lymphedema Framework. Lipedema awareness, though not necessarily numbers, is likewise increasing. This condition is characterized by an unusual accumulation of fat tissue in the lower limbs and arms.
Globally-recognized lymph drainage therapist Meadbh MacSweeney will headline the workshop. MacSweeney serves as director of The Lymph Clinic, based in Cork, Ireland, which specializes in care of both lymphedema and lipidema. Other therapists will include Healthflow’s Fiona McDevitt, a physiotherapist with close to 30 years of experience in holistic care and manual lymph drainage. Kim Tenham, a certified lymphedema therapist at the clinic with experience in lymphatic health and client-centered care, will also present.
Free parking for the event, which will last about an hour and a half, is available on site. Individuals who opt to attend online will receive a link a day before the workshop. Tickets are refundable up to a week in advance.
