NanoResearch, Inc. Awarded Competitive Grant from the National Science Foundation’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program That Provides Seed Funding for R&D

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - MAY 16, 2022 - NANORESEARCH, INC, a scientific discovery, invention, and innovation company, has been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant of $256,000 for research and development (R&D) on a battery manufacturing innovation. The company will study process-structure-property relationships of nanolayered binder-less electrodes. This innovation looks to overcome the volume expansion and poor ionic conductivity of high capacity and low-cost materials for making electric vehicles (EVs)and powered aircraft batteries.

The project will reduce the technical risks that have delayed the potential commercialization of high capacity, environmentally friendly, naturally abundant, safer, and low-cost materials, such as iron oxide, for making next-generation advanced batteries. The potential commercial impact of the project would enable higher energy density, safer, and cheaper batteries leading to rapid and widespread adoption of low-cost EVs with longer mileage ranges, hence, eliminating range anxieties. This NanoResearch Inc. innovation will also impact science, technology, engineering, education, and new jobs.

“NSF is proud to support the technology of the future by thinking beyond incremental developments and funding the most creative, impactful ideas across all markets and areas of science and engineering,” said Andrea Belz, Division Director of the NSF Division of Industrial Innovation and Partnerships. “With the support of government R&D funds, technology startups or small businesses can guide basic science into meaningful solutions that address tremendous needs,” said Dr. David Noye, the Principal Investigator of the Project and CEO of NanoResearch, Inc.

When a small business is awarded a Phase I SBIR/STTR grant (up to $275,000), it becomes eligible to apply for a Phase II (up to $1,000,000). Small businesses with Phase II funding are eligible to receive up to $500,000 in additional matching funds with qualifying third-party investments or sales.

Startups or entrepreneurs who submit a written Project Pitch will know within one month if they meet the program’s objectives to support innovative technologies that show promise of commercial or societal impact and involve a level of technical risk. Small businesses with innovative science and technology solutions and commercial potential are encouraged to apply. All proposals submitted to the NSF SBIR/STTR program, also known as America’s Seed Fund powered by NSF, undergo a rigorous merit-based review process.
